Union home minister Rajnath Singh on Wednesday addressed an election rally for BJP in West Midnapore’s Garbeta but surprisingly maintained a total silence on both the old Saradha chit fund scam and the recent Narada sting revelation. What was even more astonishing was the silence on the Kolkata flyover crash. At a time when state BJP leaders as well as national secretary Siddhartha Nath Singh are not leaving any chance to target Mamata Banerjee, Mr Singh’s attitude was baffling. The Opposition said it was not surprised at his silence. “We have been maintaining that there is a tacit understanding between Modi and Mamata and Rajnathji’s refusal to attack the chief minister vindicates our stand,” CPI(M) politburo member Mohammad Salim said.
From the outset it became clear that Mr Singh was in no mood to attack the TMC. There was no sting in his speech which was directionless. Since he had to say something, Mr Singh said that Bengal remained as it was five years ago when Trinamul Congress was voted to power.
