A pregnant tribal woman, who had remained unattended by doctors for hours in the labour room of a government-run hospital Chhattisgarh’s Jagdalpur area, delivered the baby that slipped into a dustbin.
According to the police, the newborn lay in dustbin placed below the delivery table fornearly half-an-hour as her mother lost consciousness after the delivery.
The baby was grievously injured and was in a critical condition.
The victim, Sonu Baghel, filed a FIR in the Kotwali police station in Bastar headquarters on Saturday blaming “indifferent” treatment by the medical staff, including the doctors, at the Maharani Hospital.
The incident took place on March 20 but the FIR was lodged on Saturday. “We have begun a probe into the incident,” inspector in charge Alok Dutta said.
According to the week-old mother, she was sent to labour room when she experienced labour pains on March 20. Her mother-in-law was accompanying her to the labour room but the attending nurse asked her to leave the room.
“I was in severe pain but no doctor attended me. Later, when I was about to deliver the baby, the nurse rushed to call the doctors but by the time doctors entered the room, I had already delivered the baby that slipped into the dustbin placed below the delivery table. The baby suffered serious injury after falling into the garbage dump and contracted infections too,” the victim was quoted as saying in her complaint by the police.
