New Delhi: A day after its Uttar Pradesh chief ministerial candidate Sheila Dikshit junked the Sahara diaries, which lists payments to several politicians, including Ms Dikshit, the Congress has once again hit out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, asking him to come clean on the bribery issue.

A controversy erupted after the Congress posted on Twitter the entries in Sahara diaries listing payments to several politicians that included Ms Dikshit, former Delhi chief minister, prompting her to junk the documents.

Incidentally, these are the same documents being used by Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi to attack the Prime Minister. When asked about the names of Congress leaders appearing in these papers, Congress spokesperson Jairam Ramesh said, “Whoever, whichever name is there should be investigated. There should be an independent probe into whosoever’s name is there. Why are you shying away from an impartial, independent probe?”

He said there should first be an investigation and in the course of which some names may prove to be wrong. Mr Ramesh said action can be taken only after a probe.

Mr Ramesh asked whether Mr Modi would order an independent time-bound probe to ascertain whether there was any money laundering by certain BJP leaders and whether they were in the know of demonetisation before it was announced.

“Maximum Governance, Minimum Government”, “Maximum Drama, Minimum Governance” and “Maximum Publicity, Minimum Governance”, this is the motto of Narendra Modi,” he said, dubbing demonetisation as a “complete failure” and an “unmitigated disaster”. The Congress also asked the government to come clean on three issues.

Mr Ramesh asked who was Mahesh Shah, who had declared Rs 13, 860 crores under income declaration scheme, and asked what are his connections with Gujarat BJP leaders? Mr Ramesh said “we have been told by Gujarat BJP leader Suresh Mehta that Shah had a green channel. So, what were his relations with Narendra Modi and Amit Shah?”

The second question was in connection with BJP president Amit Shah. In Ahmedabad District Cooperative Bank Mr Shah is a director and Rs 500 crore were deposited in the same bank within one and a half days of demmoneatisation, Mr Ramesh said. “What was the role of Mr Shah and why there was no probe into it? asked Mr Ramesh

The third question raised by Mr Ramesh was related to BJP ministers in Maharashtra Pankaja Munde and Subhash Deshmukh. Mr Jairam adds that a car carrying old currency notes of Rs 10 crore crores was caught, now both Ms Munde and her sister say that this was the money of the bank. If it is so then why was it being ferried in a private car?

“Has there been any enquiry which has been done. We want to know from the Prime Minister?” Mr Ramesh questioned.
