New Delhi: The Supreme Court will hear on April 15 a petition filed by the producers of the Vivek Oberoi-starrer biopic film based on Prime Minister Narendra Modi challenging the Election Commission’s decision to stay the release of the film till the elections are completed in May.
A bench of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justices Deepak Gupta and Sanjiv Khanna agreed to hear the matter on Monday on a mention made for urgent listing of the case. The producer contended that the commission has no jurisdiction to stay the release of the film after the censor board granted the certification. He prayed for quashing the stay order and to allow the biopic to be released immediately.
On Wednesday, the Election Commission had passed an order banning “political content” that serves the interests of any political entity or is likely to disturb the level playing field during the elections.
