A Muslim youth has been arrested in Bareilly district for allegedly marrying his sister, born out of his mother’s second marriage. Marrying a sibling is not permitted according to Shariat law.

According to reports, the arrest was made after the girl’s family created a ruckus at the police station.

The biological mother of the couple had divorced the boy’s father about 20 years ago and had married another man with whom she had three daughters and a son. The boy stayed with his father and did not meet his mother and her children. A few months ago, the mother died and the son from the first marriage, who stayed with his father, came to attend her funeral.

At the funeral, he met one of the woman’s daughters and they both started meeting more often and later got into a relationship.

A few days ago, the couple eloped and went to Ajmer where they got married. The girl’s family lodge a missing complaint and the police traced the couple and brought them back to Bareilly on Sunday. The couple told their families that they had got married. The girl’s family blamed the boy since the girl is a minor and as the situation turned volatile, the police arrested him.

A senior police official said that the matter was under investigation and if needed, the opinion of clerics would be taken.
