MP: 35 inmates escape from remand home

Thirty-five inmates, some of them caught for theft and other serious offences, escaped from a remand home at Rewa in eastern Madhya Pradesh on Wednesday night.

Thirty-five inmates, some of them caught for theft and other serious offences, escaped from a remand home at Rewa in eastern Madhya Pradesh on Wednesday night. On receiving information, police teams fanned out in the city and rounded up 10 of them. On Thursday evening, 25 remand home inmates were still on the run. According to a Rewa remand home functionary, when the inmates had returned to their rooms after dinner, one of them told the watchman that he wanted to use the toilet facility. When he returned and was about to enter his room, he pulled the watchman inside and started thrashing him. In the ensuing melee, the inmates, who were kept in three different rooms managed to flee. The remand home functionary said that four home guards were present at the remand home when this incident took place.
