At a time when external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj is in Pakistan signalling thaw in the Indo-Pak ties, the Union home ministry has informed Parliament that 127 cases of infiltration bids on the India-Pakistan border have taken place so far this year. In 2014, 266 cases of inflitration attempts were reported compared to 345 attempts in 2013 and 332 in 2012.
With border guarding forces giving a tough reply to such attempts, 45 persons were apprehended and 44 terrorists killed so far this year along the border.
The MHA’s figures reveal that infiltration under the NDA regime has dipped as compared to the previous UPA regime where it had peaked in 2013.
Out of the infiltration attempts this year, 92 took place along the border in Jammu and Kashmir, 19 along the Punjab border, 11on the Rajasthan border and five along the Gujarat border.
A maximum of 21 apprehensions have been made along the Punjab border whereas only five persons were apprehended along the border in J&K.
However, the killings due to attempts to cross over was highest in JK as 37 terrorists were killed in JK and seven in Punjab.
The MHA said it is expediting border fencing works besides ensuring effective domination of the country’s international borders .
“High-tech surveillance equipments along with day and night-vision devices are being used for further enhancing security domination,” said the MHA in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha.
