A 37-year-old man allegedly killed his wife and set the body on fire in Orissa’s Malkangiri district on Thursday night, on the suspicion that she was having an extramarital affair.

According to reports, a quarrel ensued between Manindra Beg and his wife Jamuna, 33, over the suspected affair. On Thursday evening, some village elders had tried to resolve the matter, but their efforts went in vain.

The row intensified after the village elders left for their respective homes.

In a fit of rage, Manindra hacked Jamuna to death. In a bid to get rid of the evidence, the accused dragged the body to the backyard of their house, dug a small pit, dumped the body in it and set it on fire, police said.

Some villagers spotted the half-charred body of Jamuna on Friday morning and informed the police.

The police, who reached the spot and recovered the body, caught Manindra before he could flee the village. “We have arrested the accused, who was planning to leave the village. He has confessed to the crime. The body has been sent for autopsy and further investigations are on,” inspector R.K. Das said.
