India is likely to seek China’s support on the issue of cross-border terrorism emanating from Pakistan at the forthcoming joint working group meet on counter-terrorism between the two countries, slated to be held on November 4. The government is hoping that the recent re-affirmation of friendship with China in the form of ease of visa rules for Chinese and business ties during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Beijing earlier this year , will be reciprocated by the Chinese authorities in the form of enhanced counter-terror cooperation and understanding of common concerns related to cross-border terrorism emanating from Pakistani soil.
Sources in the government said the coming together of both India and China to denounce terrorist acts in the region and decry use of terrorism as an instrument of state policy will be a significant achievement.
Notably, Mr Modi had asserted that India and China face instability in their “shared neighbourhood” that can threaten the security and slow down the economies of the two countries. The spreading tide of extremism and terrorism is a threat we both face; for both, its source is in the same region,” he had said during his visit to that country in an apparent reference to the cross-border terrorism faced by India and China originating in Pakistan.
