Hyderabad: Bothered by the foul odour emanating from the drain behind the mortuary of Gandhi Hospital, the junior doctors in the hostel complained to the superintendent, Dr Chandrashekar. On the instructions of the superintendent, the drain behind the mortuary was opened and fragments of human bones were found to be blocking the drain. The drain unblocking work, which was carried out for over two hours on Tuesday morning, saw the senior doctors asking the workers to flush out everything that was there. A senior doctor from the mortuary explained, “The problem is that the workers who wash the bodies when they come to the mortuary take at least three to five corpses at a time. Those bodies that are highly decomposed tend to not have much mass and bones. After washing, the workers merely sweep the area and push all the remaining parts into the drain. Due to all this, the drain must have got blocked.” The workers cleaning the drain removed chips and small parts of human bones which were flowing out along with the water. The workers in the mortuary department have been reprimanded and told to check what they are throwing in the drains. The health inspector of Gandhi hospital has been asked to counsel the workers from time to time and advise them to not throw hard body parts in the drains.
