Helmet to check hair loss soon

The Sanjay Gandhi Post-Graduate Institute for Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS) has found a cure for people facing excessive hair loss problem. The institute is getting ready to procure a laser helmet that can arrest excessive hair loss. The equipment would be available at the hair clinic of the plastic surgery department.
Dr Rajeev Agarwal, head of plastic surgery department in the SGPGIMS, said that the laser helmet may be available by next year.
Explaining further, he said: “Laser helmet is a part of low-level laser therapy (LLLT), which is the most effective therapy to enable hair growth and help people who are losing their hair at a fast rate.”
The decision to buy the laser helmet was taken after the helmet was shown at a national workshop on hair transplant held recently. LLLT involves release of low-level laser rays which gently massage the scalp and promote hair growth.
Laser helmet is available in some cosmetic surgery centres in metros. Though the therapy would be costly, its cost at SGPGI is likely to less expensive as compared to private centres.
Dr Agarwal said LLLT was more effective than hair transplant.
“Once the hair is lost, possibility of undertaking successful transplant goes down drastically. We need hair to transplant. Absence of hair on the scalp means little or no chance,” he said.
The plastic surgery department at the SGPGIMS gets more than 60per cent cases for hair-rejuvenation and transplant. The right helmet will prevent hair loss.
“The youth should choose a helmet that fits them well. It should not be too tight or too loose and must allow air-circulation to soak up the sweat which hastens hair loss,” Dr Agarwal said.
