In yet another crackdown on NGOs, the Union home ministry served a show cause notice to an NGO run by Supreme Court lawyer Indira Jaising for alleged violation of the Foreign Co-ntribution Regulation Act.

Lawyers Collective allegedly received foreign contribution between 2006-07 and 2013-14 and the home ministry reportedly found discrepancies in the filing of annual returns of the NGO where Ms Jaising, who had served as the additional solicitor-general in UPA government, was functioning as secretary.

While the MHA maintained it has served the notice, the NGO denied receiving any such notice from the government with Ms Jaising alleging the move was an “exercise in creating a negative public perception about (her) and the Lawyers Collective”.

“Yes, the home ministry has served a show cause notice to Indira Jaising under FCRA,” a home ministry spokesperson said.

However, a statement issued on behalf of Lawyers Collective and Ms Jaising, said, “neither I nor the Lawyers Collective has received any notice.”
