Flood alert has been sounded in southern districts of Tamil Nadu. After the deluge in northern and coastal regions, rivers in the southern districts are now in full spate as more than dozen reservoirs located in Madurai region covering southern districts of Tirunelveli and Madurai are brimming.
Kanyakumari district, which has been receiving above normal rainfall for the past one month had now started receiving heavy rains over the past two days affecting normalcy in the district. Pechuparai and Perunchani dams has now started Kothayar river in the district. Dry and arid Ramanthapuram and Tuticorin districts have been receiving heavy rains and the regional meteorological department warned heavy rainfall forecast for the southern coastal districts advising the fishermen not to venture in to the sea for the next twenty four hours.
Tirunelveli which has already received its actual rainfall by the mid of November is also receiving heavy rains with catchment areas of Papanasam and Manimuthar receiving above 10 centimetres of rainfall without any break.
“Perennial Tamirabarani and its tributary Manimuthar are in full spate and a flood alert has been sounded for the second time this monsoon. This time with more rains being forecast for southern districts all measures are in place and villagers have been alerted by the local municipal administration”, a senior informed official at secretariat said. “The TV visuals on Chennai last week were alarming and now the villagers are taking the flood alert issued by revenue officials serious as two major rivers are gushing”, said Masila Mani, a villager based in Tiruneveli Manimuthar.
