Jalandhar tense after priest, 50, found dead

Tension prevailed in Khatika Mohalla at Sadarpur, the place where the temple is located, after the attack as police visited the spot.

Reports say armed assailants had attacked the priest but the police is yet to ascertain the identity of the assailants.

Chandigarh: A 50-year-old temple priest was found murdered by unidentified persons in Jalandhar in the early hours of Monday morning. Balbir Kumar worked at the Baba Balaknath temple in Kartarpur near Jalandhar. Tension prevailed in the area after the incident.

The crime came to light on Monday morning at around 3.30 am when a “sevadar” went to the temple and found Kumar lying on the floor. As he raised an alarm, people gathered at the spot.

Subsequently, the 108 ambulance service was called and Balbir Kumar was rushed to the civil hospital. He, however, succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.

The police suspects a Jammu-based devotee to be behind the attack. The suspect regularly visited the temple, a media report said citing sources. The police has registered a case of murder against unidentified people and have launched an investigation.
