Two labourers were beaten to death by cops after they refused to pay a bribe of '100 in Mainpuri district on Saturday.

According to reports, the cops rounded up five daily wage labourers on Saturday morning and took them to the police station where they demanded Rs 100 from each of them.

“The cops beat us ruthlessly when we could not pay the money. Two of us were seriously injured in the beating and died. The cops threw them into a nearby pond. The rest of us were later allowed to go,” said Birbal, one of the labourers. The two deceased men have been identified as Dilip Yadav (22), and Pankaj Yadav (24). Both were cousins.

SP Mainpuri, Dev Ranjan Varna has said that strict action would be taken against the guilty cops.

“We are probing the matter and registering an FIR. Action will be taken against the culprits. We will also suspend the accused police officials,” the SP told reporters.

The incident took place around 4 am, when the local police was conducting a routine check near the police station on the road in view of the loot incidents that have been taking place in the recent days.

A tractor full of bricks came and collided with the barrier. The policemen then stopped the tractor for checking and beat up the labourers. Later, the agitated local people, mostly labourers, also beat up the policemen at the outpost.

The bodies have been sent for post-mortem. A case of murder has been registered against the police post in-charge, two constables and two home guards.
