The BJP on Wednesday claimed that the Congress is using JNU Students’ Union president Kanhaiya Kumar to visit the Hyderabad University in a bid to deflect public attention from the UPA government’s policies which were “responsible” for the death of Rohith Vemula.
The BJP also claimed that the Congress has joined hands with those accused of anti-national acts. The BJP asked the Congress not make universities a place for its politics. “It is the policies of Congress government which led to so many suicides in Hyderabad Central University, including that of Vemula. Our government has taken measures to ensure that corrective action is taken. Now Congress is trying to deflect attention from its failure by allying with a person accused of anti-national acts,” the BJP national secretary Shrikant Sharma said.
He stated that nine students before Vemula had also committed suicide on the university campus. “The Modi government is working to ensure that no student suffers discrimination at unversities,” he said.
The Congress is using proxies to fight political battles, which it can not win directly,” said Mr Sharma. He claimed that the Congress earlier used NGOs and activists like Teesta Sitalvad against the BJP-led governments.
“When the Congress was in power, it was anti-poor and anti-students and it remains so even in Opposition,” he added.
