The Congress has fielded Muslim candidates prominently in the second list of 57 nominees for Assam, which will go to the polls on April 11, to ensure that the All-India United Democratic Front led by Badruddin Ajmal does not get the support of minorities.

Some of the prominent persons getting ticket include agriculture minister Rakibul Hussain from Samaguri, health minister Nazrul Islam from Laharighat, minorities minister Sukur Ali Ahmed from Chenga and water resources minister Basanta Das from Mangaldoi.

Also, former ministers Ardhendu Kumar Dey from Hojai, Nilamani Sen Deka from Dharmapur and Akon Bora from Dispur received tickets from the Congress. Interestingly, Mr Bora filed his nomination on Monday afternoon, much before the release of the candidates’ list by the party.

For the 126 Assembly constituencies, polling will take place on April 4 and 11, while counting will be done on May 19.

While the last date of filing nominations is March 22, the last date for withdrawing the same is March 26.

In Guwahati, Assam Congress leader Anjan Dutta said the party was hopeful of winning most of the seats in the second phase of the upcoming election.

Prominent among the 57 candidates in the second list are Niren Deka (Jalukbari), Wazed Ali Choudhary (Salmara South), Abdul Zaman (Dhubri), Sabana Akhtar (Bilasipara West), Abdul Kalam Rasheed Alam (Goalpara East), Mohammed Abdur Rashid Mandal (Goalpara West), Abdul Fazal Nasiruddin Mollah (Jaleswar), Abdur Rahim Ahmed (Barpeta), Abdul Khaleque (Jania), Sherman Ali Ahmed (Baghbar), Zakir Hussain Sikdar (Sarukhetri), Sukur Ali Ahmed (Chenga), Rekibuddin Ahmed (Chaygaon), Dulu Ahmed (Hajo), Mohammed Ilias Ali (Dalgaon), Nazrul Islam (Laharighat), Anowar Hussain (Dhing), Mohammed Nurul Huda (Rupohihat), Rakibul Hussain (Samaguri) and Alhaj Bashir Uddin Laskar (Jamunamukh).
