Chief Justice T.S. Thakur was on Wednesday instrumental in uniting a couple, who had married against the wishes of their parents, in the apex court.
The husband had approached the Supreme Court with a habeas corpus petition when he learnt that his wife had been kept in house arrest by her parents in Chennai.
According to the husband, he fell in love with when she came to Delhi on an official trip and they got married in July. But the moment the girl went to Chennai and told her parents about the marriage, she was kept under house arrest with a warning that she should not meet her husband. The husband sought a direction that she be released from her parents’ custody. The Chennai police then produced the girl in court.
Justice Thakur asked the wife, “Do you want to live with your husband ” and she replied in the affirmative. Smilingly, Justice Thakur told her, “you seem to be very happy. We are also happy to see you smiling.”
Looking at the name badge of the inspector that accompanied the wife, the CJI smiled and said, “ Oh! Your name is Indira Gandhi”. The bench directed the husband to book an airticket for the inspector to go back to Chennai.
