The recent arrest of mafia fugitive Chhota Rajan continues to create controversy, with former home secretary and BJP MP R.K. Singh jumping into the fray, refusing to give any importance to the prized catch of the NDA government. On Thursday, Mr Singh said “Chhota Rajan is not a big catch” and “at best he can be equated with a criminal.”
For the Indian agencies, nabbbing India’s most wanted Dawood Ibrahim will be an uphill task and a real test.
On his way to the prison in Bali, Rajan had told the media that he “did not surrender.” However, Mr Singh indicated that it may be a possibility that Rajan wanted to surrender because of his high threat perception from rival gangs , particularly Dawood. On Thursday, reports coming from Bali claimed that Rajan, who is wanted in over 75 heinous crimes ranging from murder, extortion to smuggling and drug trafficking, indeed wanted to return to India. “I never surrendered. I want to go back to India. Don’t want to go to Zimbabwe,” he told reporters. Indian security agencies are likely to send a team of officials to Bali to bring him back to India and has put the deportation process on fast track. Rajan was travelling with the identity of Mohan Kumar when he was apprehended at the airport by the Indonesian police on a tip off from Australian authorities. There has been speculation over whether Rajan’s much publicised arrest was part of a “deal” with Indian security agencies. The government officials have denied any such claims.
