The joint statement in which Opposition parties alleged that the Centre was harassing the woman president of the Allahabad University Students Union had the signatures of Congress leaders Jairam Ramesh and Rajeev Shukla, CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury, among others. The statement noted that “they are aghast that the university administration across the region are hunting students who have a different view than of the ABVP”. “We are agonised over the fact that the first lady president of the Allahabad University Union, Richa Singh, is being harassed by the administration. A government which refuses to learn that the autonomy of educational institution is the foundation of democracy is sowing widespread discontent in campuses by its blatant support to the ABVP’s goonda-ism,” it read.
