Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha district president in Badaun district Kuldeep Varshney, who had announced a prize of Rs 5 lakhs for cutting off the tongue of JNU Students’ Union president Kanhaiya Kumar, has been expelled from the primary membership of the party after a furore over the issue.
The matter found an echo in the UP Assembly on Saturday as Congress members raised the issue and demanded strict action against the BJP leader. The state government assured action against the person concerned. Congress MLA Pankaj Malik said that an attempt was being made to vitiate the atmosphere in the state by making such statements.
Parliamentary affairs minister Azam Khan said that there was no need to worry on the issue became the BJP had no other issue left except disturbing communal harmony. “This began with us and now that Ahmad and Ali have become silent, they are targeting Kanhaiya. I assure you that the government will act firmly against such elements,” he added.
Meanwhile, BJP Badaun district president Harish Shakya told reporters that the party has nothing to do with Varshney’s controversial statement.
“Kuldeep Varshney’s statement is his personal one and the party has nothing to do with it. He has been expelled from the primary membership of the party for giving such a statement without the consent of party office-bearers,” Mr Shakya told reporters on Saturday.
Kuldeep Varshney had announced in Badaun on Friday night that he would give Rs 5 lakhs to anyone who cut off Kanhaiya Kumar’s tongue because the latter was issuing statements against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
