In Assam, a district run by lady officers

The home district of Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal has become a unique one for being ruled by only women officers.

An IAS officer of the 2011 batch, Roshni Aparanji Korati, has been given charge of the district administration, while Ms Amanjeet Kaur, IPS, heads the district police. Though, it may not be a planned move, most of the civil and police sub-divisions of the district are also manned by women officers.

Ms Gayatri Sonowal has been serving as the SDPO of Titabor subdivision of the district. Most of the revenue circle offices of the district too, including Majuli, which elected the chief minister, have been manned mostly by lady officers. Moriani Revenue Circle of the district is headed by Ms Tarali Das Gogoi. The Assam police battalion of Jorhat district is also headed by a lady officer, Ms Violet Baruah.

Key posts in the health and state electricity departments are also in the hands of lady officers.

Ms Moushmi Phukan is the SDO of the electricity department while another lady officer heads the State Bank of India local branch in Jorhat. A number of extra assistant commissioners, running the day-to-day administration of the district, are also ladies.

It is significant that Jorhat is also one of the most peaceful and best-managed districts in the state.
