Srinagar: An Army officer and seven jawans were injured as a grenade exploded during a training session in the woods of Handwara in J&K’s frontier district of Kupwara on Tuesday. The Army and police sources said a team of the Army’s 21 Rashtriya Rifles led by Maj. Surab Suman was passing through the woods of Nagranad area of Zatchaldara, in the Rajwar belt of Handwara, when the blast took place. Another report said the officer was giving demonstrations to soldiers when a hand grenade exploded accidentally, causing serious splinter injuries to him and seven soldiers.

The officer and another critically injured soldier were later airlifted to Srinagar. A gunfight meanwhile erupted between militants and the security forces in the Tral.

A Jaish-e-Mohammed module was neutralised in South Kashmir Tuesday after at least two terrorists from the outfit were killed by security forces, officials said. While the identity of the slain terrorists was not ascertained, reports said that one of those killed was the nephew of Maulana Masood Azhar, the chief of outlawed Jaish-e-Mohammed.
