UP: Inmates order booze, six jail officials suspended

Lucknow: The Yogi Adityanath government, on Monday, suspended six officials of the Rae Bareli jail, including the superintendent and jailor, after a video clip went viral on the social media.

In the video clip, four jail inmates were seen calling up their friends on mobile and ordering liquor. They also boasted about their connection in jail and ordered money to be paid to jail officials.

The state government has also initiated a departmental enquiry against jail officials for their complicity in the act.

The suspended officials include the jail superintendent, jailor, deputy jailor, one head warder and two warders.

The four under trials who were seen consuming alcohol have already been transferred to separate prisons in Fatehpur, Sultanpur, Pratapgarh and Barabanki.

However, the police have registered an FIR against the inmates for possession of prohibited articles inside the jail.

Rae Bareli District Magistrate, Sanjay Kumar Khatri, also conducted a raid in the jail after the video was brought to his notice but he could not find any prohibited items seen in the video except a cigarette lighter. Sweets and dry fruits were also found in barracks.

DIG jails Umesh Srivastava also inspected the jail on Monday.
