Guwahati: The Union minister of state for railways and senior BJP leader Rajen Gohain on Friday said that those who are opposing the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016 wants to turn Assam into an “Islamic state”.

Ignoring the ongoing agitation against the citizenship bill in the state, Mr Gohain also asserted that draft of the National Register of Citizens was not error-free.

Pointing out that the draft NRC in which names of a large number of Bangladeshi has been included, Mr Gohain also supported the stand of his party MLA Shiladitya Dev.

He argued, “The Bangladesh-origin Hindus have supported us, so we (BJP) are also supporting the Citizenship (Amen-dment) Bill 2016 that would pave the way for granting citizenship to this community. It is Bangladeshi-origin Muslim who are posing threat to the identity and culture of indigenous communities in the state.”

He also reiterated that there was no threat to our culture and tradition from Hindu Bengali.

“It is Bangladeshi-Muslim who poses serious threat to our culture an tradition,” he added.

Questioning the accuracy of the draft NRC, Mr Gohain said that the Citizenship Bill would provide justice to the minority Hindus who fled from neighbouring countries because of religious persecution.
