BJP leader resigns from party over police ‘harassment’
He was earlier sentenced to five years imprisonment by a local court after being convicted of opium smuggling.
Bhopal: Gunvant Patidar, a local BJP leader and vice-president of Mandsaur zilla parishad in Madhya Pradesh, has resigned from the party.
Mr Patidar, who brought kin of six farmers slain in the June six, 2017 incident of police firing on peasants in Mandsaur to chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan for talks between them to end the farmers’ stir then, resigned from the party three days ago alleging harassment by local police.
He wrote a letter to Mandsaur district collector and SP seeking action against the erring police officer for harassing him, a senior district police officer said on Monday.
Interestingly, he ruled out the possibility of joining Congress, although, he indicated that he may support the Opposition party in the November 28 Assembly elections in the state.
The farmer leader won the election for the post of vice-president of local zilla parishad in 2014 as an independent candidate and had joined BJP in 2015.
He was earlier sentenced to five years imprisonment by a local court after being convicted of opium smuggling. He was later granted bail by the MP high court.
