Bhopal: Incidents of stone pelting and arson marred a Muharram procession in district headquarters of Shajapur in Madhya Pradesh, the police said on Tuesday.

Violence erupted when stones were thrown at the direction of Muharram procession carried out in the town late on Monday night, provoking a mob to torch three-two wheelers.

The police had to resort to baton charge disperse the mob.

“A case of arson and rioting has been registered against unidentified people. The situation is under control now”, Shajapur district superintendent of police (SP) Pankaj Srivastav said.

Later, a peace meeting among various groups in the town was convened. Shia Muslims observe Muharram to mourn martyrdom of Prophet Muhammad’s grandson Hazrat Immam Hussain Ali.
