New Delhi: India on Friday said British national Jagtar Singh Johal arrested by the Punjab police recently “is being investigated for some very serious crimes, including plans for targeted killings of certain individuals in India”.

According to recent news reports from Punjab, Johal was arrested in connection with the killings of Hindu right-wing leaders in Punjab.

The ministry of external affairs (MEA) on Friday said, “The individual (Johal) is being investigated for some very serious crimes including plans for targeted killings of certain individuals in India. All due processes of the land are being followed. Since he is a British national, the British High Commission has been given consular access. We do expect the law of the land to take its own course.” The Punjab police has claimed that the killings were carried out by elements backed by ISI and Khalistani separatist elements.
