Flood situation grim in Assam, CM takes stock

Guwahati: The flood situation worsened further on Saturday, affecting over 4.25 lakh people in twenty districts of Assam. Three more people have been killed since Friday night, taking the toll to 25.

Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal directed the ministers to immediately rush to flood-hit areas to take stock of the situation and strengthen the relief and rescue operations besides ensure proper relief to camp inmates.

Assam State Disaster Management Authority said flood waters, affecting thousands of people in twenty districts, has inundated about 1,107 villages in 57 revenue circles of the state. A crop area of over 32,148.59 hectares was under waters.

The Brahmaputra was flowing above the danger level at Sonitpur, Neamatighat, Goalpara and Dhubri. Other rivers like Desang (at Sivasagar), Dhansiri (at Golaghat), Jia Bharali (at Sonitpur) and Kushiyara (at Karimganj) were also flowing above the red mark. More than 19,656 people have been displaced due to flood, and many of them have taken shelter in 181 relief camps across seven districts. Western Assam’s Karimganj is the worst hit where over 1.60 lakh people have affected. The ministers have also been asked to visit the affected areas and supervise the relief and rescue 
operations.
