Guwahati: In what may be called an attempt to draw attention, the anti-talk faction of United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) on Thursday opposed a call of pro-Swadeshi organisation to boycott goods made in China in Assam.

In the wake of a standoff between China and India in the Doklam area of Sikkim, some Swadeshi organisations in Assam had given a call for the boycott of goods made in China.

Taking a cue from the boycott call, Ulfa(I) publicity secretary Arunodoy Asom in an email to local newspapers said, “Anyone calling for boycott of Chinese goods in Assam are acting at the behest of India. China and Assam are friends and inimical behaviour towards each other would benefit our enemies.”

He added, “According to economists of Western South-East Asia region, China, Thailand, Myanmar and Malaysia are just a stone’s throw away from Assam.”

The outfit said goods from China had not made any adverse effect on the state and China and Assam were friends and not foes.

It is significant that elusive Ulfa (I) chief Paresh Baruah keeps on shuttling between Myanmar and Ruili in Yunan, a frontier province of China. The outfit argued that inimical behaviour towards China would benefit their enemy. The Ulfa (I) defines India as its “enemy”.
