Lucknow: Students of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) have started an indefinite dharna at the university gate, protesting the police inaction against right wing activists who raised anti-Jinnah slogans on the campus and the subsequent lathicharge against the AMU student.
The campus, meanwhile, has virtually been converted into a fortress with Rapid Action Force (RAF) and police deployed all over and tension continues to prevail on the campus.
The AMU Students’ Union members who were injured in Wednesday’s lathicharge have alleged that the right wing outsiders who had entered the campus had plans of attacking former vice-president Hamid Ansari who was present for a function on the campus.
Mr Ansari, the former vice-chancellor of AMU, was to be conferred a life membership of the students union.
However, after the violence and the police attack the function was cancelled and Mr Ansari was escorted out amidst tight security. The AMU Teachers’ Association has demanded the Central government to institute a time-bound judicial inquiry into the incident.
A statement by the AMUTA executive committee has strongly condemned the “deliberate criminal activity carried out by the outsiders.
