Meerut mayor husband held for violence in city

Lucknow: The UP police has arrested former BSP MLA Yogesh Varma and have charged him with being the “chief conspirator” of the violence that unleashed on Monday during the Bharat Bandh.

The former MLA was detained on Monday along with his over 200 supporters and was later arrested in the night. Yogesh Varma is the husband of Meerut mayor Sunita Varma.

SSP Meerut Manzil Saini said that all conspirators and trouble makers would be booked under the National Security Act.

Meerut, it may be recalled was one of the worst hit districts in Monday’s violence. The protestors torched several buses and vehicles and attacked the Shobhapur police outpost. SP City Man Singh was among those injured in the violence.

Yogesh Varma, 48, who earlier represented the Hastinapur seat in the UP assembly, already has a number of police cases, including that of attempt to murder, assault and rioting against him.  

Meanwhile, a government press release said that schools and colleges in Agra, Hapur, Ghaziabad and Meerut remained closed on Tuesday.

The district magistrate of Meerut had also informed that no classes will be held from Class 1 to  degree colleges for a day on Tuesday.
