New Delhi: In what can be seen as a direct challenge to Rahul Gandhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will on Sunday visit the Congress president’s Lok Sabha constituency to launch a Kalashnikov rifle manufacturing facility, apart from other development projects worth Rs 538 crore for the region in politically curcial Uttar Pradesh.

It will be Mr Modi’s first visit to Amethi after becoming the Prime Minister in 2014 and by unveiling projects there, he wants to drive home the point that development is key for the region. The visit, scheduled just two months before the Lok Sabha polls, also reflects the BJP’s focus on Mr Gandhi’s pocket borough. Union textiles minister Smriti Irani, who had given Mr Gandhi a close fight during her contest against him in 2014 from Amethi, has been regularly visiting the area and reminding voters that the Congress president has neglected his seat despite winning from there since 2004.

It will be managed by Indo-Russia Rifles, a joint venture between India’s Ordnance factory and a Russian firm. It will produce the last series of Kalashnikov rifle in the Korwa Ordnance Factory.
