A six-year-old boy was killed on Friday when the van of his own school hit him while he was entering the premises in Jeedimetla.

Jashwanth Reddy, a UKG student of Vignan Sudha Talent School, died on the spot. On Friday at around 8.30 am, Jashwanth’s father Mr Ramreddy, an employee of Aurobindo Pharma, dropped him at the school gate. The boy was walking inside when the school van (AP 28TA 3437) entered the campus.

“The driver Srisailam did not notice the kid walking and the front left part of the van hit the child, causing a severe head injury. The school staff rushed him to a nearby hospital where he was declared brought dead,” said Jeedimetla inspector A. Chandrashekar said.

Jashwanth’s family members accused the school of negligence. “If they were careful about the movement of the school van inside the campus, my son would have been alive,” said Mr Ramreddy.

Police said that there was an ayah in the van at the time of the accident but she too did not notice the child.

The driver, Mr Srisailam, who has been working with the school for more than three years, has a valid heavy vehicle driver’s license and the van also has a valid fitness certificate and all other documents.

The Education department has started an inquiry into the incident. “We are probing whether it was negligence on part of the school management,” an official from the Education department said.

An accidental death case was registered against the driver and the body was handed over to the family after post-mortem.
