Euro 2016: Must-win for Czechs and Turks
Down to their last group match, both Turkey and the Czech Republic need a win to have any hope of advancement.
Down to their last group match, both Turkey and the Czech Republic need a win to have any hope of advancement.
The two teams met in the group stage at the European Championship eight years ago in Geneva, and Turkey came back from two goals down to win 3-2. That sent the Turks on the road to an eventual spot in the semifinals.
This year, the teams occupy the bottom two places in Group D. Neither has impressed so far in France, but they will get their chance to turn things around on Tuesday at Stade Bollaert-Delelis.
Turkey, however, has yet to score a goal in their two matches, losing to Croatia 1-0 and to Spain 3-0.
Turkey’s woes so far have prompted coach Fatih Terim to apologise to the team’s fans.
Croatia’s Modric in doubt for big game
Croatia may be without one of its best players for its toughest matches. Luka Modric is nursing a muscle injury and is doubtful to play in the decisive Group D match against Spain on Tuesday.
Spain has already advanced to the round of 16, but Croatia needs at least a draw to secure second place without depending on other results.
The Croats are second in the group with four points, two behind Spain and three ahead of the Czech Republic. Turkey has yet to earn a point. Croatia would still be likely to advance as one of the best third-place teams regardless of Tuesday's results.
