A 26-year-old woman and her two minor children were killed when a portion of their flat’s roof collapsed in a multi-storey building in west Delhi’s Uttam Nagar early on Monday.
The deceased have been identified as Manju (26), Daksh (5) and Tannu (2). Another member of the family, identified as Sushil (28), who was injured in the incident, has been admitted to Chanan Devi Hospital.
The Delhi Fire Service said the mishap was reported at around 2.40 am when the portion of the flat’s roof on the first floor of the building in Mohan Garden collapsed, burying the occupants. An inquiry is being conducted by the building department in connection with the incident.
Besides the Delhi Fire Service, various other agencies, including the police, the local municipal corporation and local administration, carried out the rescue operation. Two buffaloes were also buried to death in the building debris. The dead buffaloes were taken from the site by the municipal corporation personnel.
Locals alleged that the DJB’s sewerage work may have led to the incident and demanded action against those responsible for it.
However, the South Delhi Municipal Corporation said that the two-storey house was a temporary structure, covered by an iron roof.
The ground floor of the house was used to keep cattle and a family was living on the first floor.
