With the city struggling to cope with waterlogged roads in the monsoon season, deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia said he has directed the government and civic agencies to submit a joint inspection report on Tuesday. Heavy rains in the last several days have thrown the city’s traffic out of gear due to widespread waterlogging.

South Delhi was the worst hit on Monday with severe traffic congestion due to waterlogging between IIT-Delhi and Munirka, Moti Bagh, Chirag Delhi, Saket, Modi Mill, Moolchand, South Extension, Yusuf Sarai, AIIMS, Lodhi Road, Andrews Ganj, Greater Kailash, Nehru Place and Jasola.

The Delhi government has announced a 24X7 helpline number, 1077, for public complaints on waterlogging. The Delhi police too has been roped in to identify spots prone to inundation.

AAP Delhi convenor Dilip Pandey filed a compliant against BJP MLA Vijender Gupta for allegedly posting fake photographs of waterlogged roads on Twitter. He said that frustrated BJP leaders are now resorting to misinformation to defame the AAP government and mislead the people of Delhi.

Earlier on Monday, Mr Sisodia called a senior high-level meeting to review the government’s preparedness on handling waterlogging woes. “The reports will be followed up by further immediate corrective measures to minimise the problem of waterlogging in the national capital,” a government statement said.

The Monday meeting was attended by public works department minister Satyendar Jain, water minister Kapil Mishra and senior officials of New Delhi Municipal Council, North Delhi Municipal Corporation, East MCD, South MCD, Delhi Cantonment Board, PWD, Delhi Jal Board, revenue, urban development, irrigation and flood control departments, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, and the Delhi traffic police.

Mr Sisodia directed the officials to take strict action against any department or individual for negligence of duty. In the high-level meeting, it was pointed out that waterlogging at AIIMS flyover was due to the ongoing construction by the National Buildings Construction Corporation Ltd. Mr Sisodia has directed the local sub-divisional magistrate to issue challans against the NBCC.

The BJP-run civic agencies alleged on Monday that the Delhi government is trying to pass the buck on the issue of waterlogging in the city. North MCD mayor Sanjeev Nayyar said after inspecting areas like Nangloi, Mundka, Bawana and Narela, his team found out that many of the PWD drains were clogged.
