Leader of the Opposition in the Delhi Assembly Vijender Gupta has written a letter to Delhi education minister Manish Sisodia and demanded the immediate provision of free education and study material to poor children. Mr Gupta said that children belonging to economically weaker sections are not getting free and compulsory education due to casualness and red tapism in the Delhi government.

The Leader of the Opposition said on the one hand the Delhi government is boasting that it has paid maximum attention to education in the previous and current Budget so that no child is deprived of education, and on the other hand, private schools in the city are refusing to implement instructions issued by the education minister and the education department.

“This has affected the future of poor children. The Delhi government has taken no strict legal action against any of the private schools so far. If poor children are deprived of the right to education, the BJP, along with parents of poor children, will fight against it,” he added.

Mr Gupta mentioned that scores of parents were visiting his office daily with the complaint that none of the private schools were following the directions issued by the Delhi government. Not to say of providing this material to the students free of cost, they are being compelled to buy school books, stationery, uniform, school bag, etc. at arbitrary price of more than five times in the market. The parents, who refuse to buy these costly materials from the school, are being threatened by removing the names of their wards from the school rolls.
