CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury complained to the police here after receiving threat calls over his support to the Jawaharlal Nehru University students who are protesting the arrest of their students’ union president Kanhaiya Kumar

CPI national secretary D. Raja also had claimed to have received similar calls over his support to the protesters. On February 13, the CPI had claimed that Mr Raja had received threat calls over support to the JNU students demanding release of Mr Kumar. “I do get threat calls. When we met the (Union) home minister, I did raise the issue with him that we are getting anonymous calls, threatening to shoot us down. All these things are happening. So, we will be taking it up formally with the government,” Mr Raja said.

Deputy commissioner of police (New Delhi district) Jatin Narwal said the police has received a complaint about threat calls to Mr Yechury and a probe has been initiated. However, no case has been registered till now.

Sources in the CPI(M) claimed to have received three threat calls at the party head office between 10.30 pm and 1 am on Sunday night. ”The callers were abusing Mr Yechury over his support to the JNU issue. They said, ‘Whatever he (referring to Mr Yechury) is doing, is not right and we will see him’ if he continued to support the protesting students.”

“They (the callers) said they belonged to some organisation called Aam Aadmi Balvir Sena. We suspect it is the same organisation that had attacked our head office on Sunday,” the CPI(M) source said.

The police suspects that the three calls were made by the same person. The source added that the CPI(M) had traced the numbers from which the threat calls were made and had lodged a complaint in this regard with the Mandir Marg police station.

The police has registered an FIR in connection with Sunday’s attack on the CPI(M) head office and arrested three men. On Monday, a group of youths had allegedly again tried to vandalise the party office.

The CPI(M) had handed over one of them, identified as Sushant Khosla, to the local police and two others, Ved Prakash and Rocky, surrendered later.

The trio had told the police that they belonged to Aam Aadmi Sena, but the CPI(M) alleged that the three men belonged to the RSS.
