Robbers barged into a senior engineer’s residence in Green Park, cordially greeted his daughter and 12-year-old grandson and went on half-an-hour stealing spree after holding them hostage at gunpoint.

A newly-appointed household help had aided their entry into the house and fled along with them. The robbers ransacked the house and fled with jewellery and cash worth Rs 50 lakh.

The incident was reported around 3.30 pm on Saturday while the engineer, Vimal Nagpal, had left his daughter Niyati and grandson Dhananjay with their newly-appointed household help Ranjan at their residence in G-Block. Niyati was preparing for her trip abroad and Dhananjay was watching television in a room on ground floor of the house.

According to the 12-year-old, Ranjan went to the main gate of their house and opened to allow four robbers to enter and immediately left with his belongings. “One of the men, carrying a huge knife, greeted me with a hello and asked me to accompany him to the dining room. Two others walked in behind him and went to our kitchen where our maid, Kavita, was having lunch,” said Dhananjay, adding they asked him to calm down and tied his hands with a cloth and taped his mouth.

The robbers then looked for valuables and ransacked the house. One of them went upstairs to Niyati’s room and held her hostage too. According to Niyati, they first tied her up and later agreed to let her off if she gave them the keys for the almirah. The robbers stuffed the valuables and cash in their pockets and left calmly, after wishing goodbye to the 12-year-old.
