Concerned with the safety of women, the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) has decided to illuminate almost all the dark spots in the area coming under its jurisdiction with energy-efficient LED lights.
For the installation of the energy-efficient LEDs to illuminate dark spots, recently SDMC mayor Shyam Sharma ordered installation of the LED lights with an aim to make the localities well-lit and instil a sense of security among the citizens.
Mr Sharma also directed the department to accomplish the target in a time-bound manner. For the identification of dark spots, Mr Sharma has written a letter to all the 104 councillors of SDMC, requesting them to identify 100 dark spots in their respective wards.
“Through this special collective effort, the SDMC will be able to illuminate 10,400 dark spots in its area,” the mayor said.
Mr Sharma said that the councillors would be provided 100 LED lights each for installation as per requirement in their wards. “The SDMC has pulled up its socks to make the entire area under its jurisdiction well-lit very soon and there will be no dark spot in our area,” Mr Sharma added.
Meanwhile, the SDMC has already started the replacement of conventional streetlights with LEDs in parks and religious places. According to a senior official, the SDMC has already replaced around 1.5 lakh conventional lights with LEDs which have longer working efficiency and are less prone to faults.
“With coordinated efforts, the SDMC will be able to replace the rest of 48,000 streetlights very soon. It is expected that the total number of LED lights installed may go up from 1.98 lakh to over 2.05 lakh with the installation of lights in parks and religious places,” he added.
