A 12-year-old girl allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself in South Delhi’s Safdarjung area on Thursday afternoon after her mother beat her up and harshly scolded her for bedwetting.

The deceased girl, Komal, lived in a shanty along with her parents and five siblings — three sisters and two brothers. Her mother Sangeeta works as a domestic help and her father Dhani Lal, is a rickshaw-puller.

“She used to urinate in the night unconsciously. Her parents were angry with her over this issue and had scolded her many times. On Thursday morning too, she urinated on the bed in her sleep. Due to this her mother’s sleep was broken. She got angry and beat up Komal,” the police said.

Komal’s father also scolded her, saying they were unable to sleep due to the stench of her urine. The victim’s angry parents also warned her that she would have to sleep outside the room from now and then left for their respective jobs.

“Komal, who was heartbroken after being scolded by her parents, decided to take the extreme step. She hanged herself from the ceiling. The police took her body to a nearby hospital where she was declared brought dead,” the police said.

No suicide note was recovered from the possession of the deceased from the crime scene, but the Delhi police sleuths have recorded the statement of her parents. The body of the deceased was handed over to her parents after a post-mortem was conducted.

“She might have committed suicide after being scolded for urinating on bed. This could be the only reason that triggered the incident,” the Delhi police said.
