Marking the culmination of his month-long “Deoria to Delhi kisan yatra” in poll-bound Uttar Pradesh, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi was able to successfully draw crowds for his final address in the capital. Surrounded by hoards of buses, Mr Gandhi reached Jantar Mantar for the final address of the kisan rally. Sharing the stage with leaders Raj Babbar and Ghulam Nabi Azad, the Congress vice-president accused the Prime Minister of “failing to deliver justice”.

Targeting the government and the RSS wing, the Congress vice-president said, “Modiji ne insaaf nahi diya, unhone desh bhar me nagriko ko ladaya hai,” adding, “Everywhere I go, there is violence. Community leaders have spoken at length about how the government has not only failed to provide justice but also incited violence between communities.”

Mr Gandhi had at least 10 meeting points in Delhi. The leaders of several states belonging to Congress greeted Mr Gandhi. Congress workers from the states of Haryana, Rajasthan, Punjab, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh were present in large numbers.

When the entourage of the Congress leader reached Bhairon Mandir in Delhi, a scuffle broke out between the supporters of Haryana Congress president Ashok Tanwar and former CM Bhupinder Singh Hooda. Mr Tanwar sustained a minor injury on his head in the clash and was taken to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital by the Delhi police, where he was visited by senior Congress leaders Janardan Dwivedi, Motilal Vohra and Asha Kumari. Later in the evening, Mr Gandhi, dressed in blue jeans and white T-shirt, also visited RML to see the Haryana Congress president.

The two groups clashed over the area domination at the venue where farmers from Haryana had gathered to receive Mr Gandhi.

The Congress has announced that it will waive off loans of farmers when it comes to power in Uttar Pradesh. The Congress also distributed Kisan Maang Patras to farmers in which details of loans and electricity bills are mentioned. According to sources, 75 lakh maang patras have already been collected by the Congress. The total estimate which they are looking at is about 2 crores which they hope to complete in the coming weeks.

Lashing out at the Modi government, he said only the Prime Minister and his friends were “happy” as money has come into the pockets of 15 top businessmen and not the farmers, labour, and small shopkeepers.

Mr Gandhi said, “Modiji promised bank accounts to everyone, but there is no money in those accounts. All his promises were fake.”

It was after a long time that the Congress rally saw hoards of supporters cheering the party leaders. The rally threw the traffic situation in the central Delhi area out of gear with cars of party workers blocking major roads connecting the venue.
