The driver of the car, identified as Mohsin, a gym instructor by profession, fled the scene, leaving the sedan there, and he is still at large, the police claimed. The possibility of this being a case of drunken driving has not been ruled out, the police said. A case has been registered and a team has been formed to track down the errant driver, additional DCP (north) Aslam Khan said.
According to the police, it received a call about the incident in the early morning hours and a team was sent to the spot. The victim, whose identity has not been ascertained yet, was rushed to a hospital where doctors declared him dead.
From initial probe, it emerged that the car (Chevrolet Optra) was being driven at a very high speed. The driver lost control over the vehicle and climbed the pavement crushing the man who was sleeping on it. The identity of the driver was traced with the help of the registration number of the car, which has been impounded by the police.
