Calling attention to the dismal state of the Walled City, also known as Shahajahanabad, the Heritage India Foundation will hold a heritage marathon to Save Heritage — Save Chandni Chowk on Sunday. The marathon aims to draw attention towards the fact that Old Delhi has nearly 525 havelis which are in pathetic condition despite the government declaring these structures “protected”.

“The Shahajahanabad Redevelopment Corporation (SRDC) has no power and no vision for changing the sorry situation of Chandni Chowk. More power should be given to it for it to take stern steps,” said MP and foundation president Vijay Goel.

The marathon is being organised with the support of the Resident Welfare Associations and local shopkeepers. A committee has also been established for the same. The marathon will cover Old Delhi areas, including Dariba, Fountain Chowk, Town Hall, Fatehpuri and Khari Baoli Chowk, said Mr Goel.

“There is so much space in Chandni Chowk that a 40-acre park can be constructed. But it needs good administration. More than 30 per cent of homes are unoccupied,” he said.

Mr Goel said that he will continue his efforts through the medium of Heritage India Foundation.

Pointing out traffic congestion, the MP said that such a situation has arisen due to absence of traffic planning.

“Worsening the situation is the presence of wholesale markets. A huge number of rickshaws and e-rickshaws has taken over and leaves no space for pedestrians. As a result of this mess, neither does the public enjoy nor are the rickshaw drivers able to earn their living,” he said.
