In a shocking incident, a 24-year-old man was allegedly battered to death while his friend suffered serious injuries when they were beaten up by unidentified youths outside a liquor shop in northwest Delhi’s Swaroop Nagar area on Thursday evening.

The deceased, identified as Irfan, had gone with his friend Rahul on a motorcycle to a liquor shop near his house in Swaroop Nagar when he allegedly got into a heated verbal argument with the accused. The police said the argument escalated into a scuffle and the accused allegedly started thrashing Irfan and his friend Rahul.

The incident took place at around 5 pm on Thursday. Irfan collapsed on the spot after being beaten up by the group of unidentified youth. The accused, who have not been arrested as yet, fled from the spot.

Eyewitnesses at the spot made a PCR call after which Irfan and his friend Rahul were taken to a nearby hospital, where Irfan was declared dead on admission. His friend is undergoing treatment at the hospital, said a police officer.

According to an investigating officer, the cops are scanning CCTV footage of the crime spot to establish the exact sequence of events as well as to ascertain the identity of the accused.

Locals, according to police sources, blocked the Outer Ring Road on Friday morning and placed Irfan’s body on the road for a few minutes to protest against his death. The sources added that senior police officers of the northwest district reached the spot and pacified the angry locals. Traffic on the Outer Ring Road was disrupted due to the protest, especially at Mukarba Chowk
