Northwest Delhi’s Kirari area is set to get a new multispeciality hospital. The Delhi government’s health department has recently given a nod for a 100-bed facility.
Rituraj Govind, the MLA from the Aam Aadmi Party who represents the constituency in the Assembly, said the hospital will make public healthcare more accessible to the people living in the area. Currently, local residents rely on Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital in Mongolpuri and Dr Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hospital in Rohini for multispeciality care.
“It’s a big thing for us. Kirari is a low per capita income area with 95 per cent migrant population,” the MLA said, adding that his constituency has a population of over 5 lakh. Acco-rding to him, there is a proposal to increase the capacity of the hospital to 300-400 beds in the coming years.
Sources said the multispeciality hospital will be ready in nearly two years. Until then, the northwest Delhi constituency will rely on a polyclinic for specialised care in eight different areas, including gynaecology, paediatrics and me-dicine. The new polyclinic will open by the year-end.
For primary healthcare, Mr Govind said his constituency has two mohalla clinics. He claimed the clinics are drawing a large number of patients each day. “The clinics have been able to take the burden off the government hospitals in a big way. Earlier, for even fever people used to visit the government hospitals,” he said.
According to Mr Govind, 15-20 mohalla clinics will be set up in the area in coming months.
The Delhi government’s healthcare roadmap works on the primary, secondary and tertiary healthcare model. For primary healthcare like basic consultation and medicines, there are mohalla clinics.
For specialist care and a wider spectrum of diagnostics, there are polyclinics.
