The JNU administration on Tuesday said that it has initiated a proctorial inquiry to investigate the incident of missing student Najeeb Ahmed.

In addition, it has also requested all relevant Central agencies, including National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) and CBI, to help trace the first year biotechnology student.

“The administration is regularly in communication with Delhi police which has informed that they have already registered a case under IPC Section 365 and running relevant investigations. All PCR vans in Delhi and all SPs throughout India have been alerted and efforts are being made to trace the student. Further, the police has intimated all the six neighbouring states and put the information on Zip-net in northern zone,” JNU said in a statement.

Meanwhile, the campus witnessed protest by ABVP on the fourth day, demanding efforts from the administration and police to find Mr Ahmad. Classes were boycotted due to the strike called by the JNU students union. “We demand protection for students Vikrant Kumar, Ankit Kumar and Sunil in the campus,” ABVP said.

“JNU administration is deeply concerned about the safety and security of Najeeb and has been putting all necessary efforts to trace him. But the administration is highly concerned that some vested interests are trying to vitiate the atmosphere in the campus at a time when the administration is focusing on tracing Mr Ahmed. We appeal the entire JNU community to cooperate to maintain peace in the campus and to help resolve the issue,” the statement added.

However, the situation remained tense with the left-backed JNUSU and ABVP levelling allegations and counter-allegations. ABVP alleged that there is inconsistency in the statements of the JNUSU president, Mohit Pandey, and that of Mr Ahmed’s roommate, Quasim. A probe has been demanded.

A group of students of Mahi-Mandvi hostel even wrote to the chief proctor specifying nine names, claiming that they came to the hostel on Friday night and assaulted him.

Also, former JNUSU joint secretary Saurabh Sharma, who is an ABVP member, has been asked by the chief proctor to appear on October 21 for some clarification. However, the reason behind the summon is not clear from the letter.
