Amidst the ongoing political slugfest over the arrest of Jawaharlal Nehru University students’ union leader Kanhaiya Kumar on charges of sedition, Aam Aadmi Party leaders Ashutosh and Dilip Pandey on Monday met the special commissioner (law and order) of the Delhi police, Mr Deepak Mishra. The two AAP leaders submitted two video clips to the police and demanded action against those being seen in these clips, but urged him to probe the role of ABVP leaders in the controversial incident.

The party said that it is of the clear view that those who raised anti-India and pro-Pakistan slogans should be strictly dealt with in accordance with law. But, what is however, highly objectionable is the way the Delhi police has been treating innocent students and teachers. The AAP also questioned the slapping of sedition charge on the JNU students’ union president.

“We are disturbed with the fact that the Delhi police arrested the president of the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union, Mr Kanhaiya Kumar, without any evidence against him. The two video clips which we are submitting to you cast a very serious doubt on the role of the ABVP in the entire incident and must be thoroughly probed. Those seen raising anti-India slogans in these clips must be immediately identified and arrested,” the letter that the two AAP leaders submitted to Mr Mishra stated.

“You have yourself defended the decision to book the JNUSU president under the IPC section for sedition. According to us, the Delhi police’s decision is not based on law and appears to have been done under the pressure of the Central government. The police may find it difficult to pass the judicial scrutiny of its questionable move. The Aam Aadmi Party demands a fair and impartial investigation into this case. Those who have raised anti-India and pro-Pakistan slogans must be punished in accordance with the law, but the Delhi police must prove its credibility by not victimising innocent students and teachers of JNU,” the letter added.
