A Delhi court on Wednesday remanded 14 days judicial custody to Ajay Singh, a Ph.D. student of JNU, who had been arrested by the Delhi police for allegedly raping a 26-year-old Delhi University student on the pretext of marriage.

The accused was produced before the court of Dheeraj Mittal as the concerned magistrate was on leave. The police told the court that he was not required for interrogation after which he was remanded into judicial custody.

The victim in her complaint has alleged that the accused had been raping her for the past 10 years assuring that he would marry her. Speaking with this newspaper, she told that she decided to approach the police after she came to know that he was having affair with four other girls. The victim, who claims to be a student of Buddhism, has alleged that she met the accused through one of her common friends. She had been preparing for SSC exam at that time. They had met in one of their friend’s home in east Delhi’s Nand Nagri, where the accused allegedly developed physical relation with her. She objected his move, but the accused promised that he would marry her and they continued their relationship. The accused, who is doing Ph.D. in IRC (European studies) called her several times at Brahmputra Hostel’s room number 242. The victim has alleged that he rapped her at JNU hostel room several times. On September 13, she decided to approach the police. The police took her to AIIMS where she was made to undergo a medical test, which confirmed she was sexually assaulted. The police then lodged a case of rape and arrested the accused.

It is the second case lodged against a JNU student. On September 12, a zero FIR was registered against a JNU student by police at South Delhi’s Vasant Kunj(north) police station, on a complaint filed by varsity student on the night of September 12.

“The zero FIR has been registered since the place of offence is being mentioned as Bhopal. The complaint will be trasferred to Bhopal,” said a senior police officer.
